Scammer poses as senior UK cop to steal $2.8M in crypto

North Wales Police said a scammer impersonating UK law enforcement stole $2.8 million in Bitcoin in a “highly targeted and advanced scam.”
UK police are working to recover a victim’s funds after a scammer managed to steal 2.1 million British pounds ($2.8 million) worth of Bitcoin by impersonating a senior police officer.
The North Wales Police Cyber Crime team said on Tuesday it is investigating the Bitcoin (BTC) theft, as the case “highlights a disturbing new trend targeting long-term crypto holders who use cold storage devices.”
The victim may have been identified in a data breach, making it a “highly targeted and advanced scam,” the police added.
